Awaken: March 28th

On Monday we began our worship with several songs.  We made it real simple – no sound system, just an acoustic guitar, a real simple set up.  We talked about Simplicity.  After singing several songs together we got right into the message.  In our series titled, “Means of Grace” we are talking about different spiritual disciplines – or as John Wesley called them – Means of Grace.  For this week we are focused on Simplicity.  We talked about what Simplicity is and how we do it.  Richard Foster, in his book called, “Celebration of Discipline” lays out what Simplicity is and ten helpful suggestions for the outward expression of Simplicity.  We talked about buying things for usefulness, avoiding addiction, giving things away, avoiding next best thing mindset, enjoying things without owning them, appreciation nature, avoiding buy now, pay later schemes, having honest speech, rejecting things that breed oppression of others, and getting rid of those things that distract us from seeking God first.  We talked about these ten things and then we discussed ways in which we can live simplicity, and how we do it and where we struggle.  We share our thoughts with each other in order to learn from each other and also to see where we might be in the same place as someone else.  This week you are encouraged to be mindful of where simplicity comes up from you – and how it can be a means of grace.  Come and join us next week as we talk a little about fasting and how fasting can strengthen our relationship with God.  Hope to see you soon!

Awaken: March 21st

A great night of worship!  Last night we began our worship with several songs.  After singing together we got right into the message.  We are in a Lenten series called – “Means of Grace”.  In this series we are talking about different means of grace and what they are and how we do them.  Last night we talked about prayer as a means of grace.  The message came from all of us!  Prayer is puts us in non stop constant communion with God.  Prayer is easy for some and hard for others, but know that God meets us where we are and slowly moves us along into some deeper things.  Prayer is something that we learn – we get better at prayer by practice… we talkin’ ’bout practice.  We shared with each other last night some different ways that we pray and how we prayer and why we pray.  One of the ways we grow is to learn and one of the ways we learn is to share with each other and learn from others.  Thank you all for sharing your ideas and your practices with us.  I hope that you might have learned something new or heard something that might help you.  This week, make it intentional to pray – pray in a way you haven’t before.  Experience this means of grace with us.  Come and join us next week at Awaken and we will be talking about Simplicity.  See you soon!

Means of Grace – Prayer

We are back tonight!  Very excited to be back for Worship.  I hope all of you enjoyed your Spring Break and all the places you went!  Worship will begin at 8:00pm and we will be in Baker Building on the campus of Texas Wesleyan as usual.  Come and join us for worship.   This Lent we have begun a series called, “Means of Grace”.  In this series we will be looking at several different Means of Grace and learn to use them, and learn some new methods, and learn from each other.  Tonight we will be talking about Prayer.  Bring a friend to join us and we will see you soon!

Awaken: March 7th

Last night at Awaken we had a great night of worship.  We began our new series called “Means of Grace”.  Last night we began our worship with several songs and then jumped right into what we called, “Experiencing Means of Grace”.  This was set up similar to prayer stations and it gave us a quick introduction to some of the things that we will be talking about during this season of Lent.  Lent begins March 9th.  Around the room we had several stations set up where you could get a glimpse of these Means of Grace.  We will be discussing prayer, fasting, simplicity, service, and solitude over the next 6 weeks before Easter.  We will not have Awaken next week – the university will be closed for Spring Break.  Come and join us on March 21st as we get into these Means of Grace.  See you soon.  And stay safe over Spring Break.

Experience Means of Grace

Come and join us tonight for Awaken.  Worship will begin at 8:00pm and we will be back in our regular meeting place, the Baker building on the campus of Texas Wesleyan University.  In preparation of the season of Lent we are beginning our new series tonight.  The Mondays that we meet during Lent (the time leading up to Easter) we will be talking about different ways we are in connection with God and how we develop our relationship with God.  We will be looking at the disciplines of Solitude, Simplicity, Service, Prayer, and Fasting.  Each one of these means of Grace can transform us.  Tonight we will have an introduction to each of these spiritual disciplines.  Come out tonight and get a preview of our teaching in Lent.  We hope you will join us for worship!  Bring a friend and we will see you soon!

Awaken: February 28th

We had a great night of worship last night.  It was the final week for our “I am Jonah” series and it has been awesome.  Thank you so much to Mel Strom who has been preaching each week and brought us this awesome series on Jonah.  I am glad you all found us in Lou’s Pavilion, but next week we will be back in the Baker Building.  We began our worship by singing together several different songs and some prayer.  Then we jumped into the message.  Mel talked to us on “the problem with love”.  There are three things we take from the 4th chapter of Jonah… and that is “the problem with love” is that WE don’t always get what WE want.   “The problem with love” is that it is for everybody.  And “the problem with love” is that it is unfinished.  We find tha Jonah is upset that Nineveh is not going to be destroyed.  God’s love is for everybody, It may not be seen as how WE want it, and it is ongoing and unfinished.  After the message we had a time for prayer and meditation and closed with a last song and our benediction.  This was a great night.  Next week we will be doing something a little bit different – you will not want to miss it – and neither will your friends.
