REV. DR. ZAN HOLMES, JR. will preach at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, February 23. His message “Have We Learned The Lesson of The Loaves?” is based on Mark 6:34-52. Dr. Holmes, is Pastor Emeritus of St. Luke “Community” United Methodist Church in Dallas, Texas, where he served for 28 years. He was Adjunct Professor of Preaching at Perkins School of Theology at Southern Methodist University for 24 years. Known as much for his community activism as his preaching and teaching, Dr. Holmes was elected to the Texas House of Representatives from 1968-1972, while he also served as a United Methodist District Superintendent. He is a popular author and preacher.
Dr. Holmes graduated from Huston-Tillotson University in Austin and has two graduate degrees from Perkins School of Theology at Southern Methodist University. In 2001 he was recognized as one of the Civil Rights Movement’s “Invisible Giants” in the National Voting Rights Museum and Institute in Selma, Alabama. Zan and his wife, Carrie, reside in Dallas and Los Angeles.
REV. DR. JOHN HOLBERT will preach on Tuesday, February 24 at 6:30 p.m.“Forgetting to Remember/Remembering to Forget” based on Isaiah 43:15-21 will be Dr. Holbert’s message. Dr. Holbert was born in Indiana, raised in Arizona, and educated in Iowa and Texas, receiving a Ph.D. in Old Testament in 1975. He has been a local church pastor in Louisiana, professor of religion at Texas Wesleyan University in Fort Worth, and is now Lois Craddock Perkins Professor of Homiletics at Perkins School of Theology, where he joined the faculty in 1979.
Dr. Holbert has authored eight books and numerous articles in scholarly and church journals. He was the editor for the Psalms and Canticles material of the 1989 United Methodist Hymnal. He has also served as Interim Senior Minister of two large United Methodist churches, 1st UMC in Fort Worthin the Fall of 1994 and 1st UMC, Dallas, in the spring of 1997. John is married to Diana.
REV. DR. SYLVESTER KEY, SR. will be the guest preacher on Ash Wednesday, February 25 at 6:30 p.m. Bistro will be served from 5:00-6:00 p.m. Special music will be provided by the McMillan United Methodist Church Choir. “Marked” will be the message based on Exodus 12:1-12. Dr. Key is a veteran of the United States Army. He earned a Bachelor’s degree from Paul Quinn College. Dr. Key received his Master of Divinity from Perkins School of Theology and received his Doctorate from Southwest Bible Collegeand Seminary. He has pastored numerous churches in the Central Texas Annual Conference. Rev. Dr. Sylvester Key was appointed to McMillan United Methodist Church in January of 2005. His appointment brought new meaning to the scripture of Romans 8:28 “and we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are called according to his purpose.”
Dr. Key’s motto: “If it is not about making Disciples of Christ, then it is foolishness,” has become his approach to doing ministry.
